The Bair Hugger warming blanket system rests on the floor and the blanket is placed over the patient. The Bair Hugger warming blanket pulls in air, warms it up, and delivers it throughout the blanket part of the system.
Unfortunately, the device mixes with the floor air that has the highest concentration of contaminates. These germ particles then make there way to the surgical site and onto the hip or knee implants.
It only takes one small bacterium to enter the surgical field and cause a devastating deep joint infection, also identified as a periprosthetic joint infection (PJI).
16,ooo patients suffer from a periprosthetic joint infection yearly. This number has increased as use of the warming blanket for joint replacement surgeries has increased.
The Bone & Joint Journal published a study in 2012 that showed a 74% increase in the risk of infection for patients who utilize a forced air warming blanket during surgery.
3M sold nearly 13 Million warming blankets in 2014.
